Meet Daniel Brooks who joined The Perse School, Singapore in January this year. Daniel teaches year 5B.
What is your role at The Perse School and for how long have you been a teacher here? I am a teacher in Year 5 and only joined The Perse School, Singapore in January 2026
What inspired you to become a teacher? I was inspired to become a teacher through my previous jobs as a teaching assistant and working in youth corrections in NZ. They made me realise that I wanted to help others better themselves as people. I then had some days observing some teachers and loved what they did. The rest is history.
How long have you been a teacher and what do you love most about it? 9 years. I love seeing the growth in children across a year when they move on from being in my class.
What is one thing students might be surprised to learn about you? I am scared of birds & clowns.
What was your favourite subject when you were in school? PE. I love sport so any opportunity to be involved, I will.
What is a hidden talent or hobby you have outside of teaching? I play a lot of sport outside of school. I play AFL and golf. I am currently learning Japanese and trying to read more.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?I really want to go to England. For the pure fact that I love Manchester United and want to watch a game at Old Trafford. I also really want to explore more of Asia – Japan particularly.
What is one thing on your bucket list? One thing on my bucket list is St Andrew’s Golf Course. I would love to play there one day.
If you could create a new school subject, what would it be? New Zealand Studies. I would love for you all to learn a huge amount about the culture, language and nature of NZ. It’s so far away that I feel lots of people don’t get the chance to visit.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? If you do nothing else today, be kind. That has served me very well over the years. Kindness is underrated and I think the more we can be kind, caring and respectful of people, the better the world will be.
What do you love most about The Perse School Community? The diversity. I came to Singapore for a change in lifestyle and diversity. Coming from NZ, it certainly has that. That is what I love most about the community around The Perse School, Singapore.
